Who We Are
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION

A diverse group of over thirty people first assembled in 1999, to discuss how to improve animal welfare and its services in the communities of the Lakeland area. With the assistance of a founding group member, they were introduced to the services provided by the only animal shelter in the Lakeland area, a facility run by the City of Cold Lake. The group was also informed about other regional animal services within the Town of Bonnyville and Municipal District of Bonnyville No. 87 and St Paul, in total this is a population base of over 50,000. Shortly after this introduction stage, the group registered as a non-profit organization within the province of Alberta, and is now known as The Lakeland Humane Society (LHS).

The purpose of creating a society was to have an organization that:
-Will speak for the animals
-Offer programs and services that will support and educate
-Offer services that will improve the lives of animals
In November 2003, the Lakeland Humane Society came into agreement with the City of Cold Lake for the use of the facility to provide animal care services to all impounded animals within the City of Cold Lake.

The Lakeland Humane Society is an animal care and educational organization that serves in many capacities; as an animal care facility and placement agency for lost and homeless animals; a pet care resource centre; a foster care provider; and so much ore. We are not just an animal business we are very much a people business as well. We support and promote the human - animal bond, educating young and old, and finding solutions to the challenges of this diverse and fast growing community of people and animals.

Unfortunately, the number of animals that we are caring for each year continues to increase but we are doing our best to find all of our adoptable animals new, loving homes. In 2005, we had an increase in our adoption rate and a large decrease in the amount of animals euthanized. Only one cat was euthanized in 2005, due to overcrowding all other animals were euthanized because of illness, aggression, or serious injury.

THINGS WE DO:

AFFILIATES

The Lakeland Humane Society operates independently of all other animal organizations and humane societies. We are members of the Alberta SPCA and the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies.

The Alberta SPCA does not operate an animal shelter but does enforce the animal protection laws in the areas of Alberta other than Edmonton and Calgary. The Lakeland Humane Society does not have the right to enforce laws so all complaints are forwarded to the Alberta SPCA or the RCMP.

The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies acts as an information source to many of the humane societies across Canada.

The City of Cold Lake and the Village of Pierceland are responsible for animal control. This includes picking up strays and answering domestic animal complaints. The Lakeland Humane Society is not responsible for animal control.

Please be aware that the Lakeland Humane Society does not receive any part of donations or funding sent to these organizations.
